The Ministry of Health (MoH) in Nepal has begun a free health care service for disadvantaged people. Under this program, all the hospitals must reserve 10% of their beds for poor, underprivileged, elderly, single women and persons with disabilities and provide them with treatment for free of cost. Government and private hospitals are directed to strongly follow the provision from December 2016. The existing 10 per cent free bed facility covers the medical counseling, lab fees, nursing fees, diagnostic services available in the respective hospitals and oxygen facility. The services would be provided to the needy patients on the recommendations of respective Village Development Committees or Municipalities, District Development Committees, District Administration Offices, District Public Health Offices. Needy patients can themselves fill up the form to claim the services. The form is free. The Ministry will monitor the implementation of the provision. Youth Initiative’s Volunteers will monitor five hospitals in Kathmandu, to ensure they are held to the Government standards, allowing those at risk of exclusion to access health facilities. They will also monitor two schools in Kathmandu.
